Blown Glass

The first glass made in North America was in Mexico in 1535 by artisans brought by the Spanish from Europe. Although these original glassworks were short lived, glassblowing was reintroduced into Mexico hundreds of years ago and flourished, due largely to the simplicity of the ingredients and the ingenuity of the Mexican arts and crafts tradition.

Using nothing more than a glob of molten glass, a blowpipe, and a few tools, a master craftsman produces fabulous pitchers, bowls, vases, and glasses using techniques very similar to those used by the craftsmen 500 years ago.

Molded and blown while red-hot, these handcrafted glasses retain their fiery essence while delivering a sense of cool simplicity to any setting.

Authentic Mexican glassware will contain a pontil, a mark at the bottom of the glass, that indicates it has been mouth blown. The glass blower cuts the hot glass when he finishes a piece.

Because each piece is handmade, shape and size can vary slightly and tiny bubbles may appear within the glass. This exemplifies the hand-blown technique, making every piece a unique example of blown glass craftsmanship.

Mexican glassware is made using lead-free, untempered, recycled glass.

Today, Mexico is well known for it’s affordable, rustic hand-blown drinking glasses, many of them characterized by a cobalt blue band at the rim.
