Zapotec Wool Rugs

The Zapotec rugs are hand-loomed using the best quality of 100% sheep’s wool.  They are created in the Southwestern state of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Zapotec weavers are renowned for their craftsmanship, with weaving playing a critical role in shaping their cultural identity.  The indigenous artisans who create these rugs craft them entirely by hand.

The colors used for the rugs are a special blend of dyes made from a large selection of plants, insects and minerals.  Among these are the Indigo plant, Zacatlaxcalli plant and the Cochineal bug.  This in part is what makes these Zapotec rugs last so long while maintaining their color and texture.

Although the designs draw upon traditional Mexican and Mayan patterns, each rug is slightly different, depending of the weaver’s approach and style.
